Literacy Volunteers of Bangor (LV-Bangor) provides free tutor support to adults with the lowest levels of literacy. Through trained and dedicated volunteers, LV-Bangor helps adults who want to improve their reading, writing, and/or English speaking abilities.
In 1969, LV-Bangor became the first Literacy Volunteers of America affiliate in Maine and was one of the first state affiliates to be accredited with the national organization, ProLiteracy America. LV-Bangor serves roughly a 25-mile radius of Bangor; however, adult learners outside this area can receive assistance as volunteer tutors are recruited and trained. LV-Bangor employs a part-time executive director who oversees all the programming.
Literacy Volunteers of Bangor is located at 200 Hogan Road within United Technologies Center, a regional technical high school. The programming is run by a part time executive director, Mary Marin Lyon. The office hours are Monday – Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
