Hello World!

Literacy Volunteers of Bangor, Maine is getting digital. Recently, we have created a website that you can go to by clicking here, or use the above About tab to find out more about us. Look for posts from our Executive Director, Mary Marin Lyon, or myself as we share our Tutor-Learner stories and what is happening in Literacy around Bangor. We hope that at the very least, you will enjoy hearing about the work we are doing. If you get a charge from reading our success stories, please do not hesitate to contact us about volunteering or donating! Below you will find our recently updated mission and core values:

Through the dedication and respect of trained volunteers, we empower greater Bangor area adults with improved reading and English language skills through no cost, learner-centered instruction that enhances life skills in the areas of family, health, work, and community.

Core Values
We affirm the following as guiding principles for everything we do:
Literacy is a civil right, the foundation of democracy.
There is no substitute for the caring heart of a volunteer.
Everyone has the right to access lifelong learning opportunities.
Barriers are challenges to be eliminated.
We believe in readiness, not “compliance.”
There is no such thing as an “average learner,” and there is no such thing as the “best way to learn.”
We seek to “change the direction of their lives without judgment,” not “change their lives.”
We are providing opportunities for lifelong learning, not remedial education.
Adults expect and deserve individualized, personalized education.
Mistakes are opportunities to learn.
The adult learning process is a teacher/learner partnership and relationship.
The process begins by starting where the adult learner is.

I look forward to sharing more with you in the future.

Sincerely,

Benjamin J. Smith
